What is our relationship with God supposed to be like? I have been asked that question many times over the years. As I reflect back on my relationship with God I think it is important to understand that we don’t wake up one day and our relationship with God has reached maturity. It is a slow growth process. One area of scripture that speaks to this growth is The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-9).
3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed.4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.9 Whoever has ears, let them hear."
After Jesus tells this parable to His disciples he goes on to explain the meaning in Matthew 13:18-23 as requested by the disciples.
18 "Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."
I believe as children of God our faith goes through each of the stages as outlined in The Parable of the Sower. I can honestly say my faith in God has gone through these stages. In the beginning of my journey I was the seed sown along the path. I heard the message about the kingdom of God but didn’t fully understand it so the Devil snatched away what was sown in my heart. This was by my own ignorance, lack of knowledge and sinful nature. So I began to read and study the scriptures. This allowed me to move beyond my lack of understanding. Once I gained knowledge I was the seed that fell on rocky ground. I had great joy in my heart for the word of God. However, when trials and tribulations entered my life I abandoned my faith because the Word had no roots. I was still reading and studying scriptures but I didn’t trust what I was reading thus nothing was rooted in me. When I started to slowly put what I was reading in the scriptures to use in my life I was able to move on. This allowed me to be the seed that was sown amongst the thorns. I was hearing the Word, able to get through some trials and tribulations but the worries of everyday life were preventing me from complete SURRENDER to God. Complete surrender is necessary to become the seed that has fallen on good soil and produces a crop.
When did this complete surrender moment occur? I have no idea. In my opinion there is no “aha” moment. It’s not like the V8 commercial where it hits you that you could have had a V8? In my opinion, it is a continuous growth process. What I can tell you is that I never gave up on God’s word. I kept reading and studying. I continued to pray. I put myself in positions that allowed God to work in my life. I made a conscious effort to be aware of my sinful behavior. I repented for my sins. I decided trusting God was better odds then trusting myself.
So with all this said I still haven’t answered the question, what is our relationship with God supposed to be like? All I have done is given you the process we all go through as we seek a mature and lasting relationship with God. The key word to the question is relationship. That is what God wants with us – a relationship. Think about your relationship with your spouse, parents, siblings and friends. What makes those a relationship? Love, trust and faith!
For me songwriter, Jason Gray, in his song “More Like Falling in Love” has so eloquently described what a relationship with God is supposed to be. I have included the words to this beautiful song.
MORE LIKE FALLING IN LOVE
Give me rules, I will break them
Show me lines, I will cross them
I need more than a truth to believe
I need a truth that lives, moves, and breathes
To sweep me off my feet, it’s gotta be
More like falling in love than something to believe in
More like losing my heart than giving my allegiance
Caught up, called out, come take a look at me now
It’s like I’m falling, oh
It’s like I’m falling in love
Give me words, I’ll misuse them
Obligations, I’ll misplace them
‘Cause all religion ever made of me
Was just a sinner with a stone tied to my feet
It never set me free, it’s gotta be
Deeper and deeper
It was love that made me a believer
In more than a name, a faith, a creed
Falling in love with Jesus brought the change in me, it’s gotta be
